Spring is springing all over the place! A long slow gentle spring, such as the one we are experiencing, is great for SW Michigan’s fruit industry. It’s also great if you are growing garlic, lettuce, kale, and other greens. It’s a good time to sow wildflowers, so if you are looking for good seed, Choices has a selection of the following wildflower mixes: Deer Resistant, Hummingbird and Butterfly, Bee Attracting Wildflower Mix (good to put around your veggie patch!) Dry Area Wildflower mix, and Midwest Wildflower mix. We also have packets of old-fashioned single hollyhock, bachelor buttons, and Oregon Tilth Certified Organic cilantro. We have packets of herbs for windowsill or container herb gardens, a child’s first garden, and seed to create a red, white, and blue garden. Whee!

Sunday, April 11, 2010: Beginners Organic Container Gardening, 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., $20. Pre-registration is required. Don’t have a lot of room? Learn to grow peppers, tomatoes, and other veggies in containers. Learn how to mix soils for optimum growth with minimum effort in an organic manner. Also covered will be IPM, Integrated Pest Management practices, and managing diseases organically. Slideshow and handouts provided.

Sunday, April 18, 2010: Beginners Organic Rose Growing, 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., $20. Pre-registration is required. Ye-e-e-s, roses ARE easy to grow when you know a few tricks, and those tricks are not difficult or time-consuming. Learn about Hybrid Teas and other rose varieties, and get information on growing old heritage roses, modern roses, and hardy roses. Learn what roses to grow for edible rosehips! Slideshow and handouts.

Coming in May: Planning and Planting an Herbal Healing Garden, Sunday, May 9, 2010, 2:00-5:00 p.m., $25.00 Pre-registration is required, class size is limited. Learn basic healing herbs, their properties, how to identify them and how to grow them. Learn drying techniques and organic pest and disease controls. Slideshow and handouts, and seed will be available for class participants.
